Tanbaen
丹波園
A generous scattering of black soybeans in one sweet, the distinctive flavour of mugwort in the other. Based on customers’ impressions, here’s what to expect from these two kinds of mochi at Tanbaen.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Tanbaen’s black soybean daifuku pairs soft mochi with chunky red bean paste, with large black soybeans adding plenty of character. Customers have described the filling as restrained in sweetness, with a hint of salt in the beans—a pleasing balance for those drawn to both sweet and savoury notes. One impression was that the daifuku had a thick layer of mochi and particularly large beans, making it a good choice if you want to savour their contrasting textures in each bite. Another customer said the mochi was still notably soft when eaten the following evening.
Mugwort mochi is another option. Customers have praised its pronounced mugwort flavour, which works well with soft mochi and a lightly sweetened filling. One brings the flavour of black soybeans to the fore; the other, the aroma of mugwort. Trying both offers a chance to appreciate two distinct takes on mochi sweets.
